From Brexit bedlam to the ultimate gift guide – my Telegraph picks of the week
By Chris Evans Editor, The Telegraph
Dear reader,
It has been a week of historic significance in Westminster. Indeed, our columnist and the Prime Minister’s former chief adviser, Nick Timothy, has described it as “[the week that Brexit was finally killed off](.
Will Theresa May somehow persuade enough MPs to vote for her deal on Tuesday? Or will a different deal pass through? Will Brexit be postponed, [a possibility we reported on this morning]( Or will we stay in the EU after all? I have spent much of the week discussing the permutations with my colleagues but, like everyone else, am not sure where we will end up. If, understandably, you’re confused, Sherelle Jacobs, with the help of our graphics team, has done an excellent job of [charting the likely outcomes](.
Away from politics, it was a pleasure to read Lisa Armstrong’s fascinating [two-part interview with Carole Middleton](. The grandmother of the future king rarely speaks publicly – in fact this was her first interview – and it was a welcome insight into the life of a successful businesswoman who is devoted to her now very famous family.
There was a poignant state funeral yesterday for George H W Bush, who achieved so much in his life, including overseeing a peaceful end to the Cold War and repelling Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. [Charles Moore’s tribute]( remembers how the United States’ 41st president put service above ego.
If, like me, you tend to leave your Christmas shopping rather late, you might find our smart [Christmas gift guide finder]( rather helpful. Our experts have chosen 480 perfect presents that you could give to your loved ones. It is worth having a look.
Chris
PS I would like to thank all our readers who have donated to our [Christmas charity appeal](. Nearly 100 of our editors, journalists, cartoonists and columnists spent last Sunday fielding phone calls from so many of you, [raising £85,000](. Every year I am amazed by the generosity of the Telegraph community.
