Bravery, Brexit and babies
By Chris Evans Editor, The Telegraph
Dear reader,
Welcome to my weekly selection of The Telegraph's best premium articles – free to you, because you have registered on our website. I hope you enjoy them.
Things in Westminster appear to have calmed down since last week, although only a little. Soon, MPs will be asked to make what may be their most important decision in a generation, and the debate around it has been vigorous. As always, The Telegraph has published a range of those opinions, perhaps none more closely followed than that of Charles Moore. [In his column]( he criticises the deal on the table as the “wrong one”, but senses a return to the anti-establishment sentiment that secured victory for Leave in 2016.
If you haven’t read it already, I recommend taking [a look at this piece by Camilla Tominey](. In support of Alcohol Awareness Week, Camilla has bravely chosen to tell the story of growing up with an alcoholic mother and the impact it has had on her own motherhood. It’s rare for our journalists to allow themselves to be the story, but I’m sure you will agree that Camilla’s decision was merited.
Some tales are so distinct that they are difficult to forget. You may find that’s the case with Alice Vincent’s look [into the concerning and fascinating story]( of the identical triplets separated as babies as part of a rogue psychological experiment. Alice speaks to the two surviving brothers and the creator of a new documentary, Three Identical Strangers, which follows what happened to the trio after they were reunited as young adults. It’s a gripping read.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for inspiration in the November gloom, then enjoy [Ben Bloom’s interview with Michael Johnson](. The former 200m world record holder suffered a stroke in August at the age of 50 and initially feared the worst – he tells Ben how it took him 15 minutes to walk the distance he once sprinted in just 19.3 seconds. However, by drawing on his Olympian determination, Mr Johnson has managed to make a full recovery.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to The Telegraph’s Christmas Charity Appeal. For the past 28 winters, we have appealed to our readers to donate to carefully selected charities. We are always astonished by your generosity; last year we raised in excess of £560,000. [You can learn more here about the 2018 appeal and our three chosen charities]( – Changing Faces, YoungMinds, and the Fire Fighters Charity. I hope you will consider donating.
As always, there is much, much more on our [website](. Do continue to send your feedback on this newsletter.
