I canât say this development was on our bingo card at the start of the year. [Read from your browser]( Editor's letter --------------------------------------------------------------- Hello {NAME} One rainy afternoon in a cafe on Orchard Road, a friend asked me, âWhy do you like covering startups?â I thought for a while and said, âI like rooting for underdogs who are disrupting the status quo.â This also explains why Iâve favored working at small companies throughout my career. But things are about to change: You might have heard from our CEO Willis that SPH Media, Singaporeâs largest news publisher, is [in the process of acquiring Tech in Asia.]( When it closes, the deal would be a full circle moment for me. I was once a wide-eyed intern at SPH, where I marveled at how my editor could find a story angle out of what seemed like a non-story. As a cub reporter, I had late nights calling sources, desperately asking them to talk to me before the print deadline. Iâve roamed the streets trying to interview strangers who shunned me because they thought I was an insurance agent. I then took these experiences to my eventual calling: tech and business journalism. Fifteen years on, my team and I will roll everything weâve learned back to the place that kickstarted the career of many journalists. And Iâm energized by what Tech in Asia and SPH Media can do together. Our closest partner within the SPH Media will be The Business Times, a scrappy and seasoned team with the same conviction of delivering business journalism that is excellent, ethical, and viable. For our loyal readers, know that the important things will stay the same. Tech in Asiaâs editorial team will continue building on the brand of content weâre known for and keep our independence. Weâll stay grounded, striving for perfection but owning up when mistakes are made. After the acquisition, weâll harness the combined expertise and economies of scale to enhance editorial coverage at both Tech in Asia and The Business Times. But Tech in Asia will stay nimble even as we operate within SPH Media. Inspired by the startup spirit, weâll maintain urgency, stay lean, and move with agility as we contribute to our parent companyâs greater goal. This is crucial because believe it or not, even large media companies are underdogs in the face of rampant misinformation and tech disruption. I choose to believe we can foster in Singapore a vibrant media space as well as journalism thatâs vital and viable. Failing at this is not an option for us. Finally, Iâd like to thank you, our readers, for supporting us over the years. Youâve seen us through our growing pains, our embarrassing missteps, and our triumphs - big and small. The team will strive to earn your loyalty in the next leg of our adventure.
