I do most of my shopping on regional ecommerce platforms like Shopee - I only use Amazon to buy ebooks for my Kindle - and given that I dislike driving and have no intentions toward car ownership, most of what I hear about Tesla is in relation to Elon Musk. But of course, Amazon is more than just an ecommerce company, and while I may not be interested in Tesla’s electric cars personally, lots of other people are. Them investing and setting up something in a country - whether it’s data centers, sales offices, or factories - is usually good news. Recently, both companies have announced deals in Malaysia. But are these as big a deal (haha) as they’re cracked up to be? My colleague Emmanuel unpacks them in today’s premium story. -- Stefanie  ---------------------------------------------------------------  THE BIG STORY [Scrutinizing Amazon’s and Tesla’s Malaysian deals]( Devil is in the details or lack thereof. --------------------------------------------------------------- TRENDING NEWS [SG proptech Ohmyhome starts listing on Nasdaq]( Shares of the Singapore-based proptech firm are currently being traded at US$4 apiece. [SEA’s listed tech majors in 11 charts: GoTo inches toward profitability]( These companies could dictate whether more global investors will back Southeast Asia and decide the fate of the region’s tech industry. [Vietnam’s Vingroup invests in Grab competitor Be]( Green and Smart Mobility will also be helping Be Group transition into using electric vehicles for its services. [ID social ecommerce firm Avana struggles to pay staff]( A source told Tech in Asia that Avana has conducted several rounds of layoffs since November 2022, including cutting 30 members from its Indonesia team. [Pinduoduo app barred on Google Play Store over security concerns]( After malware was detected on versions of the app found outside Play Store, Google has advised users to uninstall it, Bloomberg reported.
