STEADY THE BOAT
How much does Thrive Agric owe its investors?
If you believe the rumors, it's anywhere from ₦50 million to ₦200 million.
But whatever extreme you believe, the truth is often shaped by agenda. Agend may move the needle... or did it?
During the week, a few people reached out to me to give some context as to why Thrive Agric was defaulting on payments.
Beyond bad economics, everything rang hollow. This [thread]( for instance, that an unpaid ₦50 million debt will damage the ecosystem..
It didn't end there.
Under new management....
Adia Sowho, a former VP for growth at Migo is now the interim CEO of Thrive Agric.
It's a move investors hope will show confidence. Ventures Platform, an early stage fund that invested in Thrive Agric released [this statement]( stating how Thrive Agric will act going forward:
- Communication to subscribers via email, with a more complete explanation of how COVID-19 impacted farming operations with an expectation of repayment horizon
- The commencement of active communications with concerned subscribers, via Zoom calls
- The release of a robust FAQ online via Twitter which addresses many of their subscribers’ and stakeholders’ key concerns

THE BACKEND
The BackEnd explores the product development process in African tech.
We take you into the minds of those who conceived, designed and built the product; highlighting product uniqueness, user behaviour assumptions and challenges during the product cycle.
This week, we're are talking how M-POKA connvinced Kenyans and Nigerians to buy smartphones in installments.
By organising payments around the mobile phone, M-KOPA gives the user easy access. By automating the payments and connecting each device to a control room, the company is able to track its assets and drive repayment for the credit offered.
Here's all the details you need.

FEMTECH
Since the term was coined in 2016, femtech, a sub-sector in health technology dedicated to creating solutions that address female wellbeing continues to gain traction and attract VC funding globally.
In Africa, however, the space is still very much in its budding phase. This segment is dedicated to telling stories of innovators, their solutions, the investors and challenges of the sector as it blooms in the continent.
Even at infancy, here's an except from this article that makes a good argument for why you should read it:
"Two months ago, we sought to understand how Nigerian women used a plethora of period apps for their reproductive health.
We created a survey to find out which apps were common, what most women used it to track and what their disposition towards the privacy of their information on these apps were.
Our survey reached women between the ages of 18 and 35, women at the peak of their reproductive life, more than half of which were single. Of the apps mentioned, two came out as the most popular period apps in use: Flo and My Calendar."
