Global platform for government, Apolitical, [has released]( a list of the world's 100 most influential people in digital government. The list includes Ghana's President, Nana Akufo-Addo, Phillip Thigo (Senior Advisor, Office of the Deputy President - Kenya), Linet Kwaboka (CEO, DataScience LTD - Kenya), Hamzat Lawal (CEO, Connected Development - Nigeria) and Nnenna Nwakanma (Interim Policy Director, World Wide Web Foundation).
Ecobank [has announced]( 11 finalists for its 2018 Fintech Challenge. The bank will induct the startups into its Fintech Fellowship at its Innovation Fair & Awards ceremony on August 30 in Togo. The African startups among the finalists include Lypa (Kenya), Wallet.ng (Nigeria), Nala (Tanzania), Litee (Benin), SESO Global (South Africa), InvestED (Sierra Leone), Secapay (Nigeria), Virtual Identity (South Africa) and MojiPay (Togo).
The University of Cape Town's Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship has [given out]( $50,000 in grants to 10 startups. The grants which were done through two different funding mechanisms were given to Ispani (sales management & data collection), Regenize (recycling startup), Jonga (home monitoring system), Little Green Things (urban farming startup), FemWash (female hygiene company), Ikhayalami (Software NGO), DiscoverIkasi (destination marketing company), Hustlenomics (accommodation platform), Vuleka (B2B e-commerce platform), and procurement service Kuba.
Endeavour [has selected]( African entrepreneurs at its 81st International Selection Panel (ISP) in Detroit (USA) held July 30 - August 1 . The entrepreneurs, Kamal Budhabhatti (Little, Kenya) and Sam Clarke (Skynamo, South Africa) were selected among 17 entrepreneurs leading 11 companies from seven countries. Endeavor supports 1,715 entrepreneurs leading 1,070 companies in 30 growth markets around the world.
Tanzania’s Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) [i]( to suspend Multichoice's license for continuing to carry free-to-air channels since it first asked the company to stop doing so in June. Multichoice said it was concerned about the regulator's plan to suspend it given the issue was pending at the Fair Competition Tribunal. TCRA already suspended StarTimes' subsidiary for failing to meet its license obligation to provide free to air content services and has also issued a suspension notice to another pay TV channel, Simbanet Tanzania .
MTN's IoT anti-poaching solution built in partnership with Wageningen University (Netherlands) is [being used]( at the Welgevonden Nature Reserve in Limpopo (South Africa) to detect the presence of poachers. The solution which has been in use for 11 months now can detect poachers with 86% certainty within a range of 125 metres via data collected using collars fitted to some of the animals that act as sentinels.
MTN Cameroon has now [confirmed]( via an official statement that the news making rounds of an internet shutdown (per our blurb in [yesterday's digest]( is fake. MTN's statement said it doesn't manage the optical fibre in Cameroon that was reported it was planning to work on during the upcoming presidential elections.
Flutterwave [has received]( approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria for its USSD code. The USSD service, according to the company, will enable its enterprise and retail customers to layer their products on the infrastructure.
During his trip to Johannesburg two days ago, Alibaba's founder Jack Ma [announced]( his $10 million fund for African entrepreneurs which will give out $1 million every year for the next 10 years. He also said he was hoping to visit at least 3 African countries every year for the next 10 - 15 years. Ma who said he initially had concerns about investing in Africa, said his view changed after interacting with young entrepreneurs across the continent.
According to TechMoran, Facebook Africa Public Policy Manager, Kojo Boakye says [he has informed]( the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) of the company's plan to stop its investment in the country during a meeting with the regulator as a result of its social media tax. Although UCC denies that there was such a conversation, Facebook says it will further engage the government about the tax before moving forward with its plans.
Team Nigeria [has won]( the Junior Gold Award at the Technovation World Pitch Summit. The five-girl team called Save A Soul developed an app (FD Detector) that can confirm the authenticity and expiration status of a pharmaceutical drug by scanning the barcode. The Technovation pitch event gathers teams of girls annually from around the world who have built tech to address pressing problems such as gender violence, autism, speech disabilities, gender equality among others.
Zimbabwe's CBZ Holdings is [looking]( to invest $120,000 in start-ups and SMEs across the country in its 2018 Youths Entrepreneurs Programme. The program which was launched two years ago will invest in 150 - 200 young people from each of the 10 provinces across the country.
Startup Guide is [calling on]( Cape Town startup founders to nominate themselves so as to get featured in its (first) handbook focused on the city's startup scene. The guide which is being put together in partnership with Silicon Cape and SAP Next-Gen which will be released on April 3, 2019 will contain a list of incubators & accelerators, spaces to work from, interviews among other things. Startups have until August 20 to nominate themselves using [this link](.
