The latest news from FineWoodworking.com - June 11th, 2022 [View in Browser]( [Fine Woodworking Logo]( [Subscribe]( Hello, {EMAIL}! [Build a traditional plate rack]( It seems like a Nancy Hiller feature has been a long time coming. I could write an entire thesis about her prowess as a cabinetmaker and human being [(as proven in this post on the Lost Art Press blog)]( but for now, we're sticking to the shining subject of her cover story in our newest issue, #297: her traditional cypress plate rack. It's a thing of beauty with strength to boot, boasting hand-cut dovetails, mortise-and-tenon joints, and cove molding. Not only that, but its history and inspiration are remarkable as well, [paying homage to Hiller's first professional job as a woodworker in 1980.]( If anything, this piece is an epistle to Hiller's humble beginnings and the people who guided her along the way. And as long as you have the patience for it, it certainly provides ample practice for crafting dovetails and through-tenons, not to mention laying out and drilling holes for dowels as well. Plate racks are such an overlooked, yet vital part of a kitchen, especially if yours is anything like mine: erring on the smaller side with limited cabinet space and no room for a full-size hutch. In fact, since I have just moved and thus thrown myself into a maddeningly never-ending cycle of reorganizing for the indefinite future, Hiller's piece couldn't have come at a better time. I might just try this project out for myself.
