The latest news from FineWoodworking.com - May 21st, 2022 [View in Browser]( [Fine Woodworking Logo]( [Subscribe]( Hello, {EMAIL}! [Staining and dying wood with Mike Mascelli]( About a year and a half ago I donned a mask and ventured up to Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking for a weekend finishing class with Mike Mascelli. It was my first time being around a group of people since the beginning of the pandemic. I was nervous, but there was no way I was going to miss this opportunity. Finishing is something many woodworkers choose to ignore. Like many, I had figured out a single method that worked for me and I never strayed—in turn, I never learned or got better. One area I avoided was adding color to my pieces. After this class with Mike, I have a much better foundation and feel much more comfortable with the notion of (gasp) dying and staining my pieces. The real game changer for me was learning that you don't have to follow a recipe, and in fact you shouldn't follow a recipe. Mike taught us the foundational information we need about stain, dyes, glazes, and toners to be able to confidently create any finish we want. The information was so great we decided to try and bring as much of my experience to you—the Fine Woodworking audience—as we could. While this series isn't a replacement for taking a hands on class, I think you'll learn about dying and staining in a deeper way than you thought you needed—and you'll be glad you did!
