[Video: Straw marquetry]( This week we're delving into one of our features from issue #295: the masterful world of [straw marquetry]( a veneering technique that has been used for centuries to embellish furniture. After it has been split, dried, and flattened, rye or wheat straw is applied to wood surfaces with various tools to create unique patterns. You may recognize it from the striking, minimalist work of Jean-Michel Frank, particularly with his historic “Round Marquetry Table.” Furniture maker Gerard Williams pays homage to 20th-century European design trends in his own work, and we had the pleasure of watching him take us through the straw-marquetry process. I was impressed that he even [harvests the straw himself]( now that's dedication. Being a rather detailed-oriented artist and maker myself, I was easily enraptured by the deliberate, meticulous practice of this technique. Watch as he skillfully demonstrates the method behind straw marquetry, step by step. He makes it look so easy I almost want to try it out for myself!
