The latest news from FineWoodworking.com - June 12th, 2021 [View in Browser]( [Fine Woodworking Logo]( [Subscribe]( Hello, {EMAIL}! [Hand-Cut Dovetails: Pins First]( It's an understatement to say that for at least the last 16 years I’ve been steeped in all things woodworking, and I love it. As an editor/photographer for Fine Woodworking magazine I live, breathe, and eat woodworking, but I’m not a professional woodworker. That said, with work, life, and family I don’t get into the shop nearly as much as I’d like. It’s fits and starts, which means I’m in a constant state of rusty. Sure the muscle memory kicks in and I don’t have to relearn to use machines; that part is second nature at this point. But when it comes to a specific task, like cutting dovetails for example, if it has been a long time I have to pause and think before I step back in. At one point, there wasn’t a week that went by when I didn’t cut a dovetail by hand, with a jig, or a combo of hand and machine. I didn’t have to think about it at all. If I’m honest, I haven’t cut a dovetail in about four years. I just haven’t made anything with dovetails. Currently though, I have started a new project and it’s dovetail heavy. The day I went in the shop to cut dovetails I went blank. Completely blank. So of course, I went back in the house and turned to Fine Woodworking videos for a refresher, [like this great one from Matt Wadja](. Yes, I’m a pins first kind of person. —Anissa Kapsales [Watch Now]( [twitter]( [facebook]( [linkedin]( [pinterest]( [Fine Woodworking #290 - July/August 2021]( Featuring Michael Pekovich, Bob Van Dyke, Tom McLaughlin, Steve Latta, and more.
