He walked to the street fellow and asked what he was chanting about. “I’m keeping giraffes away,” the fellow said. “But we've never had any giraffes around here," said the cop. "Doing a good job, ain't I?" said the fellow. This is a joke about human nature to invent links of cause and effect where none exist. If there is none, we will invent them. Just like the fellow thinking that giraffes didn’t come around because of his work. The same thing happens in the stock market every day. Our minds are an order-seeking organ. They are uncomfortable with chaos and will try to interpret reality into fantasy just to sort things out to their satisfaction. So, traders often try to find casual links that have nothing to do with each other. You see it all the time in the news. We’ve been hearing about “Santa Claus Rally.” They will tell you that 7 out of 10 times the stock market would behave this way between one date and another. But it is zero correlation. They will ride on this accidental correlation until it becomes obviously untrue, then they will move on to the next random statistic. Why? They know that humans naturally seek patterns, and these types of stories sell. So, I urge you to stay alert about random events. You should tell yourself after making a trade that you know there are millions of random events. You will stay light on your feet, ready to jump this way or that when the event unfolds. And it pays not to fall in love with the trade. Would you like to learn MORE about my favorite trading tips – and see our latest data to see where Smart Money is buying and selling right now?!
