Smart people have hard time admitting when they are wrong, and it often leads to disaster on Wall Street because even top investors get it wrong. But the critical skill is to jump when the ship starts to sink. Don’t rely on hope. If a position is going against your way, don’t hope that it will bounce back. Exit the position and move on. It is the most important skill that a trader must possess. Take Martin Schwartz as an example. He won the U.S. Trading Championship, and he had just one “secret” behind his success: - "I'll tell you how I became a winner," he told the New York Times. "I learned how to lose." The inability to jump quickly off a sinking ship has probably put traders to the grave more than any other reason. Don’t hope, don’t pray. If the position goes against you, look around to find out whether the developing problem is likely to get fixed. Look for tangible evidence. If there isn’t, exit with no hesitation.
