In our new series, Family Ties, members of our community share generational recipes that tie them to their roots – in turn, connecting us all through the power of history and good food. This week, Tastemade’s own Sarah Beaumont is sharing a latke recipe passed down through generations. Originally written by her grandmother (as shown above!), this Hanukkah staple holds tons of warm family memories. Growing up, my favorite Hanukkah tradition was the annual “Latke Party” my mom would host for all of our close family friends. It was a ruckus of kids running around, the scent of frying onions and potatoes filling the house, music, and overall merriment. I wish I could say I always helped with the latke-making but that would be a lie. My mom would spend hours in the kitchen peeling potatoes in preparation for the largest stack of fresh latkes you’ve ever seen. She always used her mom (my Nana’s) recipe and insisted it was the best. A few years ago, I was finally ready to embark on the latke-making journey myself so I asked her to send me the recipe. Let me tell you, it’s a lot more time-consuming and challenging than one would think, but it’s worth it. The scenery and guests have changed over time, but we’ve carried the tradition on. For the second year in a row, I’ll be hosting the annual latke party with my mom by my side, peeling potatoes. P.S. I take mine with a dash of vegan sour cream and apple sauce. – Sarah ❤️ Happy Holidays WHAT TO DO Which holiday treat are you? A festive zodiac reading.
