Food has the ability to bring people together, no matter our differences. In our new series, Family Ties, members of our community share generational recipes that tie them to their roots â in turn, connecting us all through the power of history and good food. First up, [Tyra Morrison]( of [Tyraâs Table]( shares the pride she takes in paying homage to her roots through her great grandmaâs recipes. Learn all about her familyâs âNeiman Marcus Cakeâ (handwritten recipe pictured above!!) and make sure to check out her newsletter [here](. This interview has been condensed. TASTEMADE: How did this recipe come to be a part of your family history? TYRA: This recipe, the âNeiman Marcusâ cake, more affectionately known in our household as âOoey Gooey Cakeâ has been in my family for generations. It's my Great Grandma Willie Maeâs recipe and she would make it for the holiday season. Ooey Gooey is a very popular sheet cake in the South, especially now, and there are a lot of renditions of the recipe, but I do think my great grandmotherâs is the perfect ratio â but I guess Iâm biased. TASTEMADE: Do you have any memories of eating or helping to make it? TYRA: This is the earliest recipe I remember making in the kitchen with my Daddy. The thing that I love about this recipe is that it brought both sides of my family together. Once my Great Grandma Willie Mae (my Mommaâs Grandma) got a little older, my Daddy began wearing the hat of âOoey Gooey Cake Maker.â She taught him her recipe, and he still makes it to this day. TASTEMADE: How do you incorporate your family's cooking style into your own? TYRA: Growing up in the Deep South, everything has TONS of (but Iâll never say âtoo muchâ) butter & oil, especially the desserts. So I use my familyâs cooking style as the foundation of my cooking style. Desserts were more for âtasteâ than for looks. My Great Grandma would say, âItâll chew the same no matter how it looks.â While I love all of our foods, sometimes, I like to opt for a healthier or more aesthetically pleasing look. TASTEMADE: What's one of your favorite holiday food memories? TYRA: Besides being in the kitchen with my Daddy every Holiday season growing up, a couple of years ago, my Momma and I threw our first holiday wine night. We curated the menu together and had tons of yummy finger foods. We asked all of our guests to bring their favorite wine, and we played Christmas music & games. I love this memory because two of my favorite things are family and food. TASTEMADE: What are some of your favorite things to cook during the holidays? TYRA: I more so love putting a creative spin on your typical festive items. For example, I know I'm making eggnog every year, but how are we enjoying it this year? Eggnog Cinnamon Rolls? Eggnog Cheesecake? Eggnog Martinis? Yummers! BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL Did you know olive oil prices are skyrocketing? Hereâs your chance to save.
