Who to follow â Chatting with Hokuto Konishi, aka [@hok]( Hokuto Konishi is, at his core, a visual storyteller. Heâs won an Emmy award for outstanding choreography and was named one of Adweekâs Top 100 creatives in 2022. Now, he works as a professional director and movement designer in Los Angeles. He recently partnered with Tastemade to [create a new logo]( in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. Below, we chat with him further about his artistic process, his global background, and what makes for a perfect bath. Between being an artist, a choreographer, and a director, you wear a million hats. Do you have a personal favorite medium of artistic expression? I would say right now Directing is a lot of fun since I get to create whatever I desire, however to me technically it's all the same thing. If I create movement and use my own body I'm a "Dancer," if I create movement and use other people's bodies I'm a "Choreographer," if I think of an idea and work with DPs, production & talent I'm a "Director." It all has different titles but essentially I'm always just creating as an Artist. You were born in Tokyo, raised in Oxford, and now live in Los Angeles. How has living globally influenced your work? I think from a very early age I was able to learn to see things from a different perspective. It's sad when I hear people always complaining and arguing to justify their own side, not realizing that what is normal for one may not be for another, and vice versa. I believe there could be a lot more understanding amongst people if they can only be open enough to letting go of their own perspective and allowing themselves to see things from another angle. Having adapted that skill at a very young age, I think I have been able to come up with ideas simply by letting go of the norm and allowing myself to see subjects from multiple different perspectives. What was your process like for creating an animated logo for Tastemade in honor of AAPI Month, and how did your heritage help inspire the design? I think oftentimes a lot of the same things tend to get showcased in media/pop culture when Japanese culture is presented. I wanted to try to pull some inspiration from something in the culture that may perhaps exist in a layer underneath. This time I got my inspiration from ORIGAMI, the art of paper folding. I feel like it's a thing that is known but maybe not as much as sushi & anime. There are so many other things in Japanese culture that have been passed down through generations with true craftsmanship that I would love to utilize for my works in the future. What's one creative project you've worked on that taught you something about yourself? When I created my first paper stop-motion video where I hand-cut over 4,000 pieces of paper, spent 300 hours for one video, I had learned that if it's for something I love, I can be absolutely laser focused and perhaps I have a lot of patience compared to most other people. As a self-proclaimed foodie, what's your favorite dish to cook at home and what's your favorite dish to order at a restaurant? There is this one dish I like making which is SO easy but you basically put chicken, ginger, garlic, green onion, salt, pepper & water in a rice cooker and THAT'S LITERALLY IT! It's so easy but comes out incredibly tasty. I also love making soft boiled marinated eggs at home too! When I am eating out I love anything uni or eel but whenever I am traveling I like to try anything I have not tried before. Where can we follow your food adventures? I post all of my food explorations at [@hungryjapanglish]( so you can check them out there! You've also shared that you're a [fan of baths](. What does one need in their home to create the perfect, relaxing bath? An incredibly easy way I like to spend my bath time whether it be at home or when I am traveling is to use some bath salt. I find it so incredible that just with a simple tub of hot water and some nice smells you can completely transport yourself somewhere else!
