August 14th, 2017 Top Stories --------------------------------------------------------------- [EXCLUSIVE: Trump HHS Severs Key Partnerships For Obamacare Outreach]( The Gist: A wide array of groups that partnered for several years with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House to promote open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act say this year has brought a deafening silence from the Trump administration, with no sign the partnerships will continue. Both representatives of the former partner groups and former HHS officials say the relationships with gig economy companies, youth organizations, churches, women’s groups, and African American and Latino civil rights non-profits were critical to keeping Obamacare’s markets functioning, and their termination is a clear example of sabotage. [Trump Ignores Charlottesville In Early-Morning Tweets]( The Gist: In a series of tweets early Monday morning, President Donald Trump signaled that he would like to move past the weekend attack in Charlottesville and his response to the violence, by mentioning issues like trade and the Alabama special election in a series of tweets instead of addressing the violence in Charlottesville. [Charlottesville Mayor: ‘I’m Finished’ With ‘Talking About The President’]( The Gist: Following President Donald Trump’s failure to condemn white supremacy after violence broke out at a rally in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday, the city’s mayor joined the chorus of Republican and Democratic politicians alike criticizing the President for not taking a harder stance against racism and white supremacists groups following the attack. From The Reporter's Notebook --------------------------------------------------------------- The White House on Sunday claimed “of course” President Donald Trump included white supremacists in his statement condemning violence at a rally in Charlottesville, though Trump did not refer to any of those movements in his remarks, [TPM’s Esme Cribb reported](. “He condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred,” a White House spokesperson told TPM by email. “Of course that includes white Supremacists, KKK, neo-nazi and all extremist groups.” In his remarks Saturday, however, Trump restricted his condemnation to that of “violence on many sides.” Agree Or Disagree? --------------------------------------------------------------- Josh Marshall: "When Gabriel Sherman asked what he identifies as a ‘senior White House official’ why the White House didn’t denounce the Nazis in Charlottesville, he got this: 'What about the leftist mob? Just as violent if not more so.' Was that official Miller? Who knows? It could have been Bannon or Gorka or frankly a number of others. There are plenty to choose from. That’s the point. This wasn’t resistance to making a conspicuous denunciation or being cute. Those were Trump’s supporters. He recognizes them as supporters, indeed as part of his movement. And he supports them. This is probably largely instinctive on Trump’s part. It’s more ideological and articulate on his aides’ part. [He’s one of them](. Let’s stop pretending." Say What?! --------------------------------------------------------------- "The President not only condemned the violence, and stood up at a time and a moment when calm was necessary, and didn’t dignify the names of these groups of people, but rather addressed the fundamental issue." - White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert on Sunday [claiming]( President Donald Trump’s failure to condemn white supremacists after violence broke out at a rally in Charlottesville was because he didn’t want to “dignify” the movement. BUZZING: Today in the Hive --------------------------------------------------------------- From a TPM Prime member: "The one, maybe only good thing, is no dog-whistling, no subtleties or niceties with Trump. Republicans have become quite skilled at dog-whistling to their base while appealing to independents and moderates to win elections. Trump is forcing them to basically speak up and pick a side. Offend the base or force 'moderates' to look at themselves in a mirror and see if they like the reflection."
