January 16th, 2018 Top Stories --------------------------------------------------------------- [New Medicaid Rules Will Give Kentucky Health Care Whiplash]( The Gist: On Friday, Kentucky became the first state in the nation, and in the nation’s history, to win permission from the federal government to impose a work requirement and several other new restrictions on its Medicaid program. Friday’s announcement, which by the state’s own estimate will result in more than 90,000 people losing Medicaid coverage, is yet another marker in a massive about-face for health care in the state. Kentucky—which just a few years ago made headlines as an Obamacare “success story,” launching its own health insurance exchange and expanding Medicaid to more than 400,000 low-income residents—has seen a sharp reversal since electing a Tea Party governor in 2015. [WaPo: Trump Also Dismissed Black Caucus In DACA Meeting Last Week]( The Gist: In the same meeting during which President Donald Trump referred to African countries as “shithole countries,” he also told congressional lawmakers that he did not care about any demands from the Congressional Black Caucus, the Washington Post reported Monday evening. [Pastor Blasts Trump ‘Sh*thole’ Remarks During Sermon Attended By Pence]( The Gist: The pastor of a historically black church in Maryland blasted the President for his denigrating comments about African countries while Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence were reportedly in attendance, according to local media and The Associated Press. From The Reporter's Notebook --------------------------------------------------------------- Martin Luther King Jr.’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III, criticized President Donald Trump on Monday for what he said was Trump’s preference for white immigrants, [TPM's Matt Shuham reported](. “When a President insists that our nation needs more citizens from white states like Norway, I don’t even think we need to spend any time even talking about what it says and what it is,” King said in Washington, according to the Associated Press, adding: “We got to find a way to work on this man’s heart.” He was referring to remarks from Trump during a closed door immigration meeting Thursday, first reported by the Washington Post, that El Salvador, Haiti and unnamed African countries are “shithole countries” from which the United States should not accept immigrants. Agree Or Disagree? --------------------------------------------------------------- Josh Marshall: "The thing about the 'King' letter is that our heroes are complex and flawed. Clearly the FBI’s efforts to collect incriminating information and use that information to attempt to blackmail King into suicide was horrifically wrong. But this history of infidelity could have come to light in legal ways. It’s hard to believe that a couple decades later it wouldn’t have come to light through aggressive media sleuthing. Would the country have been better off for having that information? [It’s very hard to see how the answer to that question can be a yes]( Say What?! --------------------------------------------------------------- "My memory hasn’t evolved. I know what was said and I know what I said." - Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Monday [once again refusing to confirm or deny]( President Donald Trump calling Haiti, El Salvador, and unnamed African countries “shithole countries.” BUZZING: Today in the Hive --------------------------------------------------------------- From a TPM Prime member: "Question: Was the money that the foundation paid to the Trump golf clubs and Trump Org in addition to the amounts paid by the golfers for greens fees, cart rentals and meals at the Trump charity events? If so, the family made a lot more than the numbers that are being reported as coming just from the foundation. I bet the cost of a charity round and a couple of meals was in the $500-$1000 range, and I bet Trump pocketed all of it."
