If you want to sell your business, you must build a business that can run without you. That's especially true when it comes to marketing the business. Using your personal brand to market your business is effective. Elon Musk does it with Tesla and Space X, we all know Jeff Bezos owns Amazon, and Steve Jobs used his charisma to build Apple… Take Apple as an example. Steve Jobs passed away about 12 years ago, and they reportedly did over $300 billion in revenue in 2022. Since Jobs passing, the company's value has also gone up over the years. If your business can only make money by having you at the core of its marketing, you will be hard-pressed to find a buyer because the mechanism that brings in customers depends on you. If you haven't read ["Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer]( there's a lot you can get from this book. What struck me is that you and I are continually being tricked by the volume of information we get every day. It depends on what study you look at. Some say the average person is exposed to 3,000 media messages a day. That's 900 before 9am. The amount of insight and wisdom you get isn't correlated to the number of words the media throws at you. I'd say the best insight you ever got probably came from a simple sentence in a book or something a wise person said. If you're looking to change, it starts with insight. I talk about the 25 cognitive biases that cause us to make mistakes. One is the 'availability bias.' What that means is that we're more likely to take an action because it's easily available to us. I did a talk once and asked 600 people in the room, "How many here have read, 'The Lean Startup.'" About 400 hands went up. Then I asked... "How many here have read, 'Made in America' by Sam Walton." One person raised his hand (and he told me later it's because he's on my newsletter - haha). I said... "Let me get this straight. A guy writes this business book. It gets a slick cover and great shelf placement in the front of the store... And it displaced a tiny $5 book written by Sam Walton who made $160-billion dollars?" At the time that was more money made than Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg... combined. Why? It makes no sense. I'll tell you why. The calculation is easy: Profit motives + availability bias = mass, uncritical consumption. The amount of insight is not always proportional to the volume of words. Marketing... Consumerism... Commercialism... Constructs designed to control you. So, the next time you walk into a Barnes & Noble (or any store for that matter), realize what they're trying to do. They're steering you toward what they want to sell you. They don't necessarily care if that's in your best interest. If it provides them with a high profit margin, they're going to move you to it. I'm not saying this is some conspiracy... or even that there's anything wrong with it. Obviously, business is an extension of life. It's a competition. People want resources. Businesses want your money. That's not evil or inherently dishonest. It's just the way the world works. So, it's up to you. You have to understand your natural biases to control what you allow to impact your brain and your life. There's a joke that goes... "The best things in life are free. The second best are expensive." Obviously, the punch line is about Ferraris and luxury trips. But I'd argue that the most expensive item isn't a Ferrari. It's ignorance. Remember, pearls aren't delivered on your dinner plate. You have to dive for them and shuck a lot of oysters. I've been talking about books but let's not forget the biggest medium... TV. The best insight usually doesn't come from the people on TV. They're just good at being on TV. The best advice might come from someone you have to get on a plane and fly to. I remember when I was 19 or 20, I flew all the way to Tasmania to meet a guy named Bill Mollison. He wasn't a very well-known guy. He is a biologist, scientist, and teacher, and is known as the "father of permaculture." I had to get on a plane, fly 10,000 miles and drive little roads through the countryside of Tasmania to get to him. And I learned, almost by dying, that they don't keep their sheep and cows behind fences, so they just walk out onto the road... So I was driving 50 miles an hour around a curve and almost slammed into a whole bunch of sheep... but that's another story. The goal is: Seek and you will find. Ask and you will receive. Knock and the door will open unto you. But notice, you have to knock. What's easily available to you is usually not the best information. TV is easily available with the press of a finger. But that's not usually the best source of information. You look up what's selling the most on Amazon, it' might be '50 Shades of Grey,' but that doesn't mean it has any insight or wisdom for you to get the good life.
