{NAME}, How much jealousy is too much? Today we're going to focus on the third pillar of The Good Life. Love. Now, I'm no relationship expert, but I've surrounded myself with some of the smartest mentors and thinkers on different subjects, including Dr. Helen Fisher, who is one of the preeminent Ph.D.s on the subject of love. She's studied love in 40 cultures and is the chief scientist for Match.com and Tinder. So, let's talk about jealousy. Most people are going to give you an extreme answer that being jealous is a horrible thing, but the truth of the matter is that jealousy, like seasoning in cooking, can be a healthy thing in moderation. No jealousy probably means there aren't enough emotions, and a relationship where people have no "mate guarding" is probably going to struggle. Jealousy is the emotional reaction to a primitive instinct that scientists call "mate guarding", which is expressed through a series of hormonal processes in our brain. Mate guarding is functional and adaptive, meaning it works. It's been around for the last 10,000 generations, and it's still present in almost every animal species, including humans. The real question should not be whether jealousy exists in healthy relationships, but rather how much jealousy is healthy and what is too much. Like most things in biology, jealousy exists on a spectrum from one to a hundred. Someone with no attachment to somebody probably has zero jealousy, while someone with neurological damage probably has zero attachment to anything. In my opinion, a healthy level of jealousy is probably between 30 to 50 on the spectrum. Of course, everyone is different, and some people may have inherited genes that make them more jealous than others. However, if you're experiencing no jealousy, it could be that you're with someone you don't find very sexually attractive, and sexual attraction is a key driver of jealousy. So, don't be too hard on yourself if you're a little bit jealous, if you engage in a little bit of mate guarding. We've evolved to want to keep our mate. A little bit of jealousy is healthy and functional, but be careful, too much jealousy can be destructive. As with most things in life, moderation is key. So, tell me {NAME}.
