Remember 33%. I'll explain why this number is important for your growth as an entrepreneur later on.
But first, let me go over the concept of a rising tide and how you can fast-track yourself to success by understanding this.
John F. Kennedy popularized the slogan “a rising tide lifts all boats.” This means that success benefits everyone participating.
But what I want you to understand is - you need to look for the rising tide.
Not necessarily riding another person’s success, but finding someone who is ahead of you... someone who is in a place where you want to be…
Find that person and learn from them.
This is what happens when you track down mentors and learn from them. They will naturally bring you up along with them, without knowing.
Now I’m not telling you to find someone and leech their knowledge and experience. You’re expected to provide value in return too.
Remember the Evolutionarily Stable Strategy. Cutting a deal to progress yourself.
This applies to relationships. If you don’t give any value in return, your mentor relationship will be over as quickly as it started.
You can learn a lot through osmosis. By being around people who are ahead of you, they’ll naturally pass on their experience onto you.
This is how you can theoretically “shortcut” to success. Now you can’t go straight to the top by doing this, you’re also expected to do the hard work…
BUT you’ll have the chance to avoid a lot of mistakes and failures most people face...just by being around mentors.
Now let me explain the law of 33%.
During your awake hours (roughly 16 hours), you should divide your time in the following:
-
33% of your time with people below you
-
33% of your time with people at your level
-
33% of your time with people ahead of you
Why would you want to spend time with people below you? A rising tide lifts all boats.
By progressing, you are helping others. This has an important effect on your self-esteem and confidence.
And by spending time with people at your level, you’ll have a group to progress together with. These will be your closest friends.
By spending time with people above your level, you learn from other people's mistakes, save yourself time, and you basically get a proven blueprint for success.
But why not spend all your time with people ahead of you? You could. But most of the time, what they’re doing doesn’t apply to you.
Remember, you can’t skip to the very top of the staircase. A fence that was built fast falls down fast. You have to go step-by-step and build a foundation.
You are wired to seek instant gratification by society and the digital age we live in. I'll get into this in another email...
But it's a danger to your success, and it's something you need to be aware of.
However, when you have a mentor, it's not uncommon to skip a step occasionally and grow and learn exponentially faster.
Knowing that, it doesn’t make sense for you to spend all your time with mentors. You're still trying to rise to that level.
Now that you understand the law of 33% I want you to create a list of 10 mentors you want to learn from.
From that list, figure out how to contact them. You won’t win them all, but you might win 1.
And having one is enough to give you a boost in the right direction.
In fact, a great way to meet mentors is to go find out where they hang out. Specifically at conferences.
Luckily for you, my friend Patrick Tucker is hosting a conference called EvolveCon 2.0. It's going to be held the same weekend as the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting.
Let me tell you, there will be some high-level people there.
Right now, you can get an [early bird discount to the conference and get a FREE ticket to watch Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger speak](.
You might run into your next mentor at this conference.

So with that in mind, finish that action step and I’ll talk to you soon.
Stay strong,
Tai
