I can never stress enough just how important mentorship is on the path to becoming successful in life. You know, we can only really learn from the things that other people have discovered and recorded, so mentors don’t just have to be related to whatever it is you’re trying to get good at. Mentors are all around you. If you wanna learn some mental toughness and learn a thing or two about dedication, the best place to look is at pro athletes. The greatest athletes of all times go on to do so many great other things and succeed over and over again because they understand how to go through the process. I was talking to my boxing coach at my gym the other day, and we got to talking about how much people in business can learn from top level athletes. He boxed in the Olympics back in the 1988, so he’s been in the game a while now. I asked him a few questions about the process and what it takes to win, and I wanted to share some advice he gave me. The first things first he told me, was that the biggest take away he’s found in boxing is that you have to believe in yourself, so that when you get in there and any form of intimidation that is within that ring or from the audience, it don't affect you. You have to separate yourself when you're in that ring or when you're training from everything else but what it is that you're doing. You gotta be in your moment. Some of the best fighters know that they’re gonna win a fight before it even starts because they can intimidate the other guy and feed off of that. Mike Tyson was the king of reading fear in his opponents. It’s ok to have fear, but you really can’t let it control you. You gotta feel it inside that you’re gonna win no matter how intimidating it is. The calmer you can stay, the more effective your gonna be. Let’s say you get in the ring and you know the guy has a killer record and hasn’t lost, you gotta go in knowing that you’ve trained harder then them, and mirror that intimidation back. You can’t show any signs of fear. A lot of people get intimidated in business. I see it all the time. They're afraid of starting a business. A lot of people are afraid of competition. A lot of people have friends and family that they don't stand up to, or are in bad family situations. Look, I get that all the hard work and effort it takes to be successful in any area life can be scary and intimidating. But if you truly wanna be successful in your life, you gotta conquer that fear, and turn it back around. If a problem comes up and rears its head, you gotta attack it 4 times harder than it affected you. If you ever find something giving you problems, don’t freak out and give up. Too many people do that, and you don’t wanna be one of those people. You gotta be willing to put in the time and effort if you wanna see the results. There’s a lot business and life lessons that athletics can teach you, and boxing is one of the best. Boxing is like a game of chess. It shows that your mentality is the number one factor to your success.
