Send them to [this link]( to subscribe to the Data Science Insider. --------------------------------------------------------------- [MP Delivers AI-Generated Speech in UK House of Commons]( In brief: Luke Evans, a Conservative MP, has become the first person to deliver an AI-generated speech in the House of Commons. The minister for Bosworth, used ChatGPT to write “a Churchillian speech on the state of the U.K. over the last 12 months.” He initially delivered the speech before Labour’s Kevin Brennan, the MP for Cardiff West, who interrupted to ask the speaker whether Evans or AI had written the speech. The speech was designed to generate debate around the regulation of AI, with Evans stating that he believes there should be: “a regulator for algorithms and artificial intelligence to run concurrently and in synergy with the technology that we’re developing.” Why this is important: Evans may have enjoyed the theatrical flair of becoming the first person to deliver a speech to the Commons written by AI, but it highlights how prevalent the technology has become and how regulation needs to be seriously considered. brief: Researchers from Brown and MIT have published a new study in Nature Computational Science that claims scientists could use ML to predict rare disastrous events, such as earthquakes or pandemics - circumventing the need for massive data sets to forecast extreme events - with the combination of an advanced ML system and sequential sampling techniques. The team realised that it is hard to predict stochastic events (where there is uncertainty or randomness involved in the outcome) as there are insufficient amounts of historical data, instead, they attempted to discover the best data that they could use which limited the required number of data points. Their research pointed to sequential sampling with active learning being the best method. Why this is important: The new method outperformed all previous modelling efforts and gives hope that we may be able to more accurately predict disastrous events. [Click here to read on!]( [NASA Will Use AI to Navigate the Moon Using Landmarks]( In brief: NASA scientists have announced that they are developing an AI to assist future astronauts in navigating the surface of the Moon without the need for satellite fixes, instead relying on landmarks to pinpoint lunar locations. The AI will compare views of the Moon’s surface with known pre-topographic models in order to pinpoint the user’s location to within 30 feet. Nasa claims that it is imperative that accurate location data is available for safety and science geotagging purposes. The communications and navigation architecture for the Moon, which is being developed with other international space agencies and industry is named “LunaNet” and is intended to bring “internet-like” capabilities to the Moon, including location and navigation services. Why this is important: The system will act as a backup when navigation methods that depend on maintaining communications links are not available. brief: In last week’s SuperDataScience newsletter we shared the outcome of how successful Forbes’ 2022 AI predictions had been. This week it’s time to see what they anticipate 2023 will bring. The ten predictions include: GPT-4 will be released in the next couple of months, we are going to start running out of data to train large language models, some members of the general public will begin using fully driverless cars as their day-to-day mode of transportation, Midjourney will raise venture capital funding, search will change more in 2023 than it has since Google went mainstream in the early 2000s, and DeepMind, Google Brain, and/or OpenAI will undertake efforts to build a foundation model for robotics. Why this is important: Last year Forbes got seven out of ten predictions correct. It will be fascinating to see if that can match or beat their record this year. [Click here to see the full picture!]( [A Christmas Message from an AI Robot]( In brief: Since 1993 The UK’s Channel 4 broadcast the alternative Christmas message as an alternative to the traditional Royal Christmas Message. The message is usually delivered by a celebrity or public figure and serves to highlight issues of the day. This year the broadcaster's festive address will be given by one of the world's most advanced robots – Ameca, and be generated by AI. Channel 4 has said that Ameca will discuss the highs and lows of 2022 and respond to human questions, in a teased quotation the robot said that 2022 was a: “learning opportunity, a chance to change the way we think about the world and a reminder to help those in need whenever we can.” Why this is important: The speech is important as it highlights both the significance of the advancing technologies and also its growing capabilities.
