A recent example was securing the Congressional Gold Medal for the Harlem Hellfighters — the men of the 369th Infantry Regiment who served with particular bravery and distinction during World War I. Sadly, ongoing racial tension greeted them upon their return from combat. The U.S. Department of War tried to abolish the famous unit in 1940 but failed after supporters of the 369th Regiment objected. Long overdue, it was my honor to take the lead on the Congressional Gold Medal award to the Regiment. The Medal is Congress’s highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. Another overdue achievement was the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill in the U.S. Senate. This bill, which is now in the House for debate, will finally bring our local, regional, and national infrastructure into the 21st century. Roads, bridges, waterways, rail systems, internet broadband, airports, power grids, and climate initiatives will be rebuilt and modernized. I’m proud to be supporting this significant new investment in our nation’s infrastructure as part of President Biden’s Build Back Better plan. [That’s why I’m asking for your help today.
