I was there to certify Joe Biden as the duly elected 46th President when insurrectionists attacked and tried to invade. Barricades were broken, windows were smashed, doors busted. Gunshots rang out. My colleagues and I were directed to put on gas masks as tear gas was sprayed through the halls of the Capitol. After a harrowing stand off we were evacuated and taken to a secure location by Capitol police. [Newsday article]( But make no mistake: the foundation of American democracy may have been shaken but it did not fall. This morning at 3:45am, Congress returned to the House floor and fulfilled its Constitutional duty to officially certify the election of Joseph R. Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice-President. It was a powerful message to the world that American democracy is stronger than those who seek to destroy it. Our democracy is stronger than any one person. President Trump, those who enabled his “big lie” for months and the insurrectionists themselves must be held accountable. They should all be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. President Trump cannot leave soon enough. I will support any action that will hold him accountable for his irresponsible and reprehensible behavior. Whether it is the removal from office by his cabinet utilizing the 25th Amendment, expedited impeachment, censure, or prosecution after he leaves office. There is a lesson to be learned from the anarchy of yesterday — a wake-up call to Congress. Common ground must be secured. The extreme partisanship that has defined Washington for the last four years must end now.
