[View this message as a web page]( [Reader Recommends]( Friday, August 25 - Sunday, August 27 Time to plan the weekend. Here's some of what we recommend: Fri 8/25: Known for his previous David Bowie-inspired evenings and a Twin Peaks rave, DJ Heaven Malone dusts off tracks from the late 70s and early 80s for a [Stranger Things night]( at a pop-up party called the Upside Down, in a space at 2367 N. Milwaukee, next door to Emporium Logan Square. Expect the Clash and perhaps an appearance by a demonic faceless beast from the flip side of the universe. 9 PM-2 AM, free Fri 8/25: Returning for a second year, [Planet Chicago]( at Navy Pier (600 E. Grand) features dance works in multiple genres from six different companies. To keep things interesting, dancers aren't the only ones moving their feet—audience members progress from one performance to another along the South Dock. 5:30 PM, free Sat 8/26: Without [Jack "King" Kirby]( we wouldn't have Captain America, the Hulk, or the Fantastic Four. On what would be his 100th birthday, the prolific comic book artist is honored by fans, friends, and artists such as Tom Kelly and BD Mead at Challenger Comics + Conversation (1845 N. Western). Donations benefit Kirby4Heroes, an organization aiming to help comics creators in need. 11 AM-11 PM, free Sat 8/26: Sarah Sherman, one of the most lauded stand-ups in the city, hosts [Helltrap Nightmare]( at the Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia) featuring alt-comics, noise machines, and a ton of surprises. No material is concrete, so Sherman and coproducer Julia Dratel are likely just as excited as the audience to see what shakes out. 9 PM, $7 Sun 8/27: The [Slow Food Farm Roast]( at Local Foods (1427 W. Willow) invites 13 different aficionados to serve up bites and demonstrate how everyone can incorporate the movement's principles into daily eating. 2-5 PM, $75 Sun 8/27: During [Viva la Rasslin]( wrestlers compete for the coveted Clusterfuck Cup at Reggie's Rock Club (2109 S. State). The road to victory involves surviving blows to the head from multiple projectiles and a "Malört Drunken Deathmatch," in which hopefuls down shots of the horrible liquor until, um, more blows to the head. The entertainment includes burlesque performers and live music, sword swallowing by Sally Marvel between rounds. 7 PM, $10 in advance, $15 at the door Sun 8/27: Neighborhood makers hawk their wares at the monthly [Hyde Park Flea Market]( (5235 S. Harper). Think DIY crafts and clothing, and a variety of vintage furniture and collectibles. 10 AM-4 PM For more stuff to do this weekend—and every day—check out our [Agenda]( page. --------------------------------------------------------------- [In this week's Issue]( Cover Story: Socialism’s diverse [new youth brigade.](Inspired by Sanders, outraged by Trump, and betrayed by the neoliberal establishment, the reinvigorated Democratic Socialists of America—including Chicago alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa—set out to paint the town red. Ryan Smith also interviews Hyde Park native [Felix Biederman](—co-host of Chapo Trap House—the socialism-friendly podcast that has become a flash point in a larger fight between mainstream liberals and leftists. News & Politics: Some Italian-Americans in Chicago say they ‘fiercely oppose’ [renaming Balbo Drive]( Responding to a campaign to remove tributes to the Mussolini henchman, some Chicagoans defend Italo Balbo’s legacy. Music: Leor Galil on Lyrical Lemonade [a Chicago blog that]( shares its juice with rising rappers. By showing love to potential stars as well as certified sensations, Cole Bennett and Elliot Montanez have built a community alongside their brand. --------------------------------------------------------------- [This year's edition of Noir City: Chicago expands its focus]( posted by Ben Sachs [Rauner fires new communications team, says the ‘intensity of the battle’ against enemies ‘is going up,’ and other Chicago news]( posted by Kate Shepherd Copyright © 2017 Sun-Times Media, LLC.
