Meaningful Rituals for Busy People turn out to be not so different from the Christmas rituals I grew

Meaningful Rituals for Busy People [Click here to read this email in a browser]( [Alternate text] [solstice rituals]( turn out to be not so different from the Christmas rituals I grew up with. Photo by Jeffery Cross. Even though I'm not a practicing pagan, the shortest day of the year has always seemed to me to be something that should be observed. [But how?]( Living in the Bay Area, I don't lack for examples of rituals marking our longest night, but when my witchier friends start telling me about them, I always feel like I'm a little bit, well, in the dark. Altars? Goddess rituals? Circle casting? The year's shortest day always does seem much too short to come up to speed on these things. But there are lots of meaningful, accessible practices that allow any of us to observe this important pivot point in the year. [We've rounded up several crafty, cozy, pine-scented ideas here](. I hope they help you light up the winter darkness this Thursday, whether that light is literal or figurative. (It'll definitely be literal in my case—I'm always going to be here and present for a holiday that calls so strongly for a gorgeous candle.) —Nicole Clausing, Newsletter Editor STORY OF THE WEEK How to Celebrate the Winter Solstice, the Shortest Day of the Year From a yule log to an evergreen wreath, honor the change of seasons on December 21 with these ancient rituals that just might resemble the holiday traditions of today.
