The home-building process and all that entails isn’t exactly known for being the most environmentally friendly. But there is a growing trend of [using materials and construction methods]( to build with sustainability at the forefront. One material we might be seeing more of in the future? [Straw bales](. In [straw-bale construction](, the bales are utilized as insulation and/or the structural elements in the home. The walls are then finished with earthen or mineral plasters—so homeowners don’t have to look at stacks of straw. And it turns out that there are a lot of benefits to straw bales, aside from the environmental aspect. They’re non-toxic, highly insulating, hard to burn when they’re really compacted, and don’t decompose easily. Interested in seeing this building material in use?
