A new study shows that [the happiest place in the whole United States is Fremont, California](, just a few freeway stops from my own home on the east side of the San Francisco Bay. In fact, four Bay Area enclaves made the list, and nine out of 20 cities named in the study are in the West, making me wonder if what some of us seek when we travel might actually have been close at hand all along.
