Plus: All About A-Frames [Click here to read this email in a browser]( [Alternate text]
Raise your hand if you made it through Thanksgiving without a cooking disaster. I did, but barely. I had a pecan pie go from still-jiggly to just-short-of-scorched in five minutes. It's so easy to let food get overcooked and there's so little you can do about it. Or so I thought. Then I read assistant editor Magdalena O'Neal's piece on [saving overcooked or even burned food](, and realized it's often possible to salvage a dish. Magdalena also has [a set of recipes she recommends we all try cooking this December](. Hopefully I won't need to practice any of her tricks, but I'll dive in more confidently knowing that an oven mistake won't always doom diner. Turning the page on November means it's time for holiday shopping. That's a little stressful, but two things are easing my mind: One is a helpful gift guide from garden editor Deanna Kizis. It suggests [a bushel of gifts for the first-time gardener](. (That pretty well describes me, so I may just add myself to my own shopping list.) The other is senior editor Kristin Scharkey's discovery that there exists, in Denver, [a beer spa](. Sip craft suds at the bar and then slip into a tub full of...not exactly beer but a relaxing and anti-oxidizing mix of hops and barley. This is a malty idea whose time may have come. Finally, we know you love A-frame houses. And we get it—Sunset has been singing the praises of the mid-century style for decades now. Home & design editor Christine Lennon took a dive into the archives and reported back on [how the style has—and hasn't—changed since the 1930s](. It's a nice reminder during a chaotic season that while the foods we cook, the gifts we give, and even the ways we relax evolve, the sturdy, triangular Western ski chalet, at least, appears to be eternal. —Nicole Clausing, digital producer and newsletter editor STORY OF THE WEEK The Recipes You Should Be Cooking This December From boozy stews and squash-topped shepherds pie to holiday cookies and citrus cakes, these recipes will end your year on a cozy, festive note.
