How to Take the Best Travel Photos

Ever taken a photo of a magazine-worthy vista and had it turn out not even good enough for social media? We've all felt the pain of an underwhelming image from time to time. I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering if my more disappointing efforts are the fault of an inadequate camera. And while pros like our own staff photographer Thomas J. Story do, of course, have pretty fancy rigs, taking good photos is really about getting certain fundamentals right, like lighting and perspective. How do I know this?
