Call it an eclipse consolation prize.

If you haven't made plans for tomorrow's total solar eclipse, it's getting late to hit the road. Hotels rooms are scarce and expensive, and major traffic jams are expected as travelers flock toward the narrow band of totality. (It's not too late to [tune into a livestream of the event](, though.) Luckily, Mother Nature is offering a consolation prize: an exploding star that will be visible all over the West. This explosion, which scientists call a nova, won't be quite as dramatic as an eclipse, but it's actually much more rare. A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months. The star in question, on the other hand, T Coronae Borealis, is an extremely unusual white dwarf star that blows its top (well, its outer gas layer) once every 79 or 80 years. So it will be, almost literally, a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Scientists don't know exactly what day this will happen, but think [it could be any time between now and September](. That's good news, because Corona Borealis, the constellation where T Coronae Borealis is found, is prominent in Western skies all spring and summer. So if you're not busy polishing up your eclipse glasses, go outside this evening and familiarize yourself with this elegant little arrangement of stars, one of the few constellations that looks anything like what it's supposed to be. (The Latin name means "Northern Crown.") At the very least, [you'll be prepared when the big event happens]( and will notice when the bright new star appears. And, who knows, tonight could be the night, so it never hurts to look. âNicole Clausing, newsletter editor A 'Once-in-a-Lifetime' Star System Explosion Is Coming SoonâHere's How to See It NASA experts and celestial superfans are over the moon about this one.
