[Garrett {NAME}]( Feb 25   [READ IN APP](   Dear Fellow Expat: I was a little bummed the other day. I haven’t heard any new music that stirred my emotions. It could be a song that makes me laugh, a song that makes me cry, or a song that makes me want to run through a brick wall. But it’s been quiet for creativity when it comes to my taste. [My doctor from yesterday]( said his favorite movie predated me: To Kill a Mockingbird… he said. I told him the best film ever directed is Vertigo… do I beat him by a few years? With music, I had this recollection of the 27 Club. This group of famous artists died at the age of 27. The list of people who passed away at that 27 is insane: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse. Two things… Shannon Hoon died at 28, a month after his birthday. He was the lead singer of Blind Melon. He was the second-best songwriter/singer in that crowd if you want to include him. He could out-sing every male on that list. His story is tragic. He was a backup singer for Axl Rose and nailed [Don’t Cry,]( as they were from the same hometown. Hoon’s range is insane. (Axl’s was better; the album Use Your Illusion II is an absolute gem and the first CD I ever bought.) Rose, Hoon, left to right. So…good. [“Change”]( isn’t my favorite song by Shannon Hoon, but it’s his best writing. This is one of the greatest forgotten songs of the 1990s. It will carve into your heart if you allow it. And you should. My contrarian argument is [Galaxie]( (In my Top 5 songs that connect with me) is his best. He was so wasted that he didn’t remember the filming. This song is for the humble. It’s an anti-materialist song. It’s also anti-car. I love the message as it defines me… It indirectly explains why I drive a Honda and not a Cadillac. This song is completely the opposite of their first album. And if Hoon would not have drowned himself in drugs, you’d know him. He’d have been a massive counter to whatever the hell you want to call our pop culture today. This song is not from a folksy band that was Blind Melon, Blind Melon. This guy is at his edge… toward his end… blistering in madness. People wonder where creativity comes from. It’s not from children’s soccer games. Personal destruction tends to create legends. Hello Amy Point Two. There has to be a No. 1. And I say this explicitly. I’ll debate you. I’ll be respectful, and you should be the same. I’m not an idiot. And you’re not one either. Kurt Cobain was amazing. Jim Morrison is one of my favorite musicians. But there is no comparison in that club… to a woman named Amy. Back to Black by Amy Winehouse is one of the most haunting songs ever written. I’ve played it a few times today, and I appreciate it so much. It’s not a debate today. It’s a pitch to you. Do you like her? Do you like Cobain? Hendrix? My point today is that there is no wrong answer. Don’t control my thoughts, I won’t push to control yours. If we can be civil over music… written by people who aren’t alive anymore… maybe we can focus on the politics of the living… in a decade. That’s all I ask. Let’s get to the week ahead. Monday, February 26 Event: Amazon Joins the Dow Jones Republic Speak: I do not understand how this took so long. Amazon is ideal representation of the American supply chain. Want something in 24 hours because you don’t want to drive a mile to pick it up? Amazon. Jeff Bezos is a legend. Buy Amazon. It’s just going to go up over time. Tuesday, February 27 Event: Nasdaq Short Report Republic Speak: The Nasdaq will release its latest short report. You know what’s funny? I sold Republic Risk for $200 a year… and these institutions are still shorting without looking at my signal. They’re getting destroyed. We… haven’t shorted this year. We are beating the S&P 500. And when a credit crisis hits… we’ll run this damn thing into the ground with a basic understanding of how capital moves in and out of the equity markets. Stay positive. Wednesday, February 28 Event: Apple Annual Shareholder Meeting Republic Speak: The now second-largest market capitalization will face pressure as the stock hovers near the 200-day moving average. Here’s a highlight of what you can expect during this meeting. They will lease phones to Americans, who will love them. Did you know that telecommunications are free? You don’t need a smartphone. Comcast of all companies will give you a free phone connection if you have their service. Or you can just use Google Voice. It’s seriously free, and people are paying for it. We are drifting in the wrong direction as a people/ Thursday, February 29 Event: Leap Day. Republic Speak: [Leap Day William]( will emerge from the Mariana Trench and trade candy for children's tears. Best holiday of the year. Let the sadness overcome you, creating[a hole that can only be filled with money](. True fact: You can’t have Leap Day without candy and cigarettes. “And when did we stop giving children cigarettes? It’s the liberal war on Leap Day.” - Jack Donehy, 30 Rock. Friday, March 1 Event: March, the economy class of months. San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Mary Daly joins a panel titled "AI and the Labor Market" Republic Speak: Mary Daly needs to quit. She’s a problem.
