On more than one occasion, my mother would confidently say, “I didn’t go through menopause. Not a single symptom.”  That’s great, ma, but every single woman enters menopause, symptoms or not.  Like my mother, millions of women today haven’t the faintest idea what changes take place in their bodies once their hormone levels sharply decrease. In fact, they don’t know much about hormones either, except maybe the name “estrogen,” and that taking hormones after menopause is bad for your health.  This is not a good thing, because losing estrogen can be far more serious than losing your wallet, your keys, or money in the stock market. You can easily replace those keys, but replacing bone density,  and treating a weakened heart are other matters all together. Which are precisely what you could face along with declining estrogen levels.    Cluelessness about your changing body in mid-age is bad enough. But, getting your education from one of the countless menopause websites that have sprung up during the last two years is a BIG MISTAKE. So is listening to your best friend, or to a doctor who knows less about hormones than you do.  Every single woman experiences midlife changes differently. Every woman needs  to be properly evaluated and treated by a healthcare provider who is an expert in women’s midlife health. No article, no book, no mother or friend can do that. Period.  ALARMIST ARTICLES To wit, a recent New York Times article claimed menopause “may also be an important risk factor for the development of dementia later in life.” Considering women represent two thirds of the approximate 6 million adults over 65 with Alzheimer’s, that’s a serious statement…...
