Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) announced on Tuesday that he has scheduled September 28th as the date for opening statements in an impeachment hearing that has sent shockwaves through Washington. This decision comes after the Republican leader yielded to demands from conservatives to hold President Biden accountable for lobbying efforts by Hunter Biden and his associates. Despite the president's consistent denial of any awareness or involvement in business dealings with foreign actors, several of McCarthy's top deputies have spent months scrutinizing financial and meeting records that have connected Biden to numerous interactions during his tenure as vice president. The initial hearing will take place before the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), who has obtained bank records tracing the flow of millions of dollars through a network of shell companies to benefit as many as nine members of the Biden family. A committee spokesperson informed the Daily Caller that they plan to call in Hunter, who is still facing charges, for testimony. "The House Oversight Committee will hold its first hearing on the impeachment inquiry next Thursday, September 28," a committee spokesperson stated. "The hearing will focus on constitutional and legal questions surrounding the President’s involvement in corruption and abuse of public office. The Committee also intends to subpoena Hunter and James Biden’s personal and business bank records as early as this week. The Oversight Committee will continue to follow the evidence and money trail to provide the transparency and accountability that Americans demand from their government." A future date will likely be scheduled for a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who has pressed the FBI and IRS about alleged preferential treatment given to Hunter during investigations into tax and gun charges. Jordan has cited testimony from IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, which suggests that the Justice Department originally intended to drop all charges and prevented Shapley's team from pursuing leads that could have implicated President Biden. The White House faced significant criticism last week for releasing a memo to mainstream media outlets, urging them to fact-check Republicans' claims that President Biden was aware of activities by Hunter that later resulted in criminal charges. Karine Jean-Pierre, in statements on behalf of the White House in the months since the president was implicated, initially stated that he never discussed business activities with his embattled son.
