[Garrett {NAME}]( May 23   [READ IN APP](   Market Update: Futures are up this morning, and the 10-year bond is falling. So, I would suggest we’re safe from any serious surprises. That said, markets didn’t like the Fed meeting minutes and the reminder that interest rates will be higher for longer. Even Paul Krugman is confused. --------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Fellow Expat: The day I fell in love with my wife was on a Saturday. We drove her blue Honda Civic up from Baltimore to Timonium, Maryland. Juicy by the Notorious BIG came on the playlist. And she knew every word of the song. It was this hook that got me. Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis When I was dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this 50-inch screen, money-green leather sofa Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur It wasn’t that she knew the words… it was how she laughed after signing the lyrics. She had a finger in the air, leaning against the seat, head back, smiling… It was just a moment in time worth bottling. As if nothing else mattered in this world. She taught me a lesson, something that I try to replicate and remember, but struggle to do: Be and stay in the moment. I thought – hell, I’m vulnerable. Maybe this was something bigger than I thought. Several months earlier, my friends knew. Rob and Dave met her in Washington D.C. We played a drinking game called caps, and Lisa made one shot all night – but it was decisive. We won 25-23. And then, after she went to sleep, my friends and I went to the Front Page in Dupont Circle – one of my all-time favorite bars. “Marry her,” Rob said. I nodded. A few years later, after finishing my Purdue degree, I asked Dr. Allen Grey, the then-dean of the MS-MBA program, what I should do next. He pointed at Lisa… then me… then back to her, telling me with his hands to marry the girl, idiot. We’ve been married for nine years now. And today is her birthday. It’s one of those big milestones. I just want to say… I’ve become so much more than I expected out of myself because of knowing her. She is a fantastic elementary school teacher. She has saved children’s lives by teaching them emergency swim techniques. And we have been terrific partners in life. We have lived in three states, seven houses, had three dogs and one daughter, and our journey is just getting started. Her laugh is infectious. Her generosity is unmatched. Her patience deserves a prize like a Pulitzer. She is blunt, all-gas, little brakes. And if you met her tomorrow, you would love her as much as I do. I want to say to my best friend… I love you. Happy Birthday. And as I said to you years ago… our time on earth is not enough. Whatever comes after this life, I promise we’ll find each other again. To everyone else, I say – thank you for listening. The Postcards letter itself wouldn’t exist without her encouragement.
