With markets in full swing, and gains a plenty, Friday afternoon goes to a local Chinese restaurant where my father and I play cards and talk baseball.

Market Update: We closed the week on an eight-day winning streak. Volatility is collapsing, and investors continue to pour into the markets. We’ve been positive on the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 since Monday. We must be cautious because oil and Bitcoin are falling as the threat of “higher for longer” interest rates still looms across the market. But with liquidity expanding and the Treasury ready to pump more money into this economy, don’t be shocked if the markets continue to defy gravity.
--------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Fellow Expat: In the 1970s, my father was a McCormick & Co. (MKC) sales director. It was a different culture back then. It had that Mad Men feel. If I had the picture on me, I’d show you. My father, in his mid-to-late 30s at the time, had long blonde hair and a mustache. He looked like Gunner Henderson on the Baltimore Orioles… just 10 years older. MLB: Gunnar Henderson (Dorsey look-alike) Part of his job was to welcome customers traveling to the Hunt Valley Inn… a hotel in the town of the same name. He also ran a company-owned bar and restaurant as the work-and-play culture had hit its apex. Not long into the job, a Chinese man arrived at the restaurant. The man took a job at the Hunt Valley Inn. The man’s wife would wait for him on the loading docks every night. He was learning English. He worked every job that the hotel would offer him. Fast-forward some years, and this man opened a restaurant in Cockeysville. He invited my father… my mother… and my brother and sister. I was… not around yet. As they sat down to eat, my brother and sister started laughing. My mother couldn’t figure out what was so funny. But my brother pointed to an ashtray. My mother must have covered her mouth…, but my father was still oblivious to the giggling. And then, the realization came. My father looked at the ashtray, the silverware, and the plates. They all said “Hunt Valley Inn” on them. Shortly after, my father’s friend approached. “Dorsey, how do you like the restaurant?” he said in his thick accent. “Wonderful,” my father laughed. “It looks just like [the Hunt Valley Inn].” The Official Game of the Florida Republic My father (who later opened his own bar) and this foreign-born restauranteur became lifelong friends. And each Friday, my father and other friends play 10-card Gin Rummy at his larger, more popular restaurant in my hometown. I was invited to join them today. As I’ve said before… my father taught me five things when I was five. - How to tally the score at a baseball game. - How to pour a Vodka, Club Soda and Lime (for him) - How to read a box score in a newspaper - How to read a stock quote in the Baltimore Sun business section. - How to play 10-card Gin Rummy. These things involve math: fractions, addition, subtraction, and percentages. I’ve played Gin Rummy with plenty of executives in my time. Thing is… this isn’t exactly a game that most people play in business these days. Rummy gave way to golf culture in the late 1980s and 1990s at McCormick and elsewhere. And while I like golf, the three splayed discs in my lower back do not. I know plenty of friends and colleagues prefer to play Spades or golf. But in the Florida Republic… we’re gonna go a little different. We don’t have a national anthem… and there’s no religion (just the blessings of the financial markets… We don’t have a President (just a Pit Bassett hound who rubber stamps everything)… and [our flag is mainly a celebration of Deion Sanders]( But we can have a national card game. And that would be Gin Rummy… If you want to learn about someone, play them in Gin. You’ll learn how they think… strategize… and what makes them tick. You have to look them in the eyes. You have to build around their thought process. And… my favorite part… you really get to screw with them. [Upgrade to paid]( Steal This Trade I’m watching the markets from this restaurant, playing cards with my father and his friends… and it’s all well and good. We’re up big on Hallador Energy (HNRG) since our “insider-linked” buy last month (up 28%)… and the Risk Portfolio is beating the S&P 500 and Weighted S&P 500. After a good week, it’s good to take it easy. This weekend, I’ll release a new report on the midstream sector. And we’ll do our usual exploration of next week. But today? [How about some insight over at Republic Insider?]( Two weeks ago… we tapped into a stock named MSCI (MSCI) and traded around Walgreens.
