If she finds it, she’ll casually drop down onto it for a bit of a roll around - the canine equivalent of a squirt of Miss Dior at the Farmers counter. She sniffs it, her version of reading the evening news - ‘Oh yes, Tiddles at number 16 is on a diet. Rolf at 47 has a cat in the house! Shocking!’ Or she eats it - gross. When it comes to the first two, dog owners love a bit of harmless anthropomorphism. It’s how we relate to these strange and wonderful furry creatures we share our lives with - and it’s kind of cute to imagine the neighbourhood dogs leaving little coded messages for each other. Eating random things, however, is not cute. In fact, it’s dangerous, as a recent trip to the emergency vet proved, [after my dog ate something mouldy.]( It is possible to control a food-obsessed dog, I’m assured. So I’ve enrolled us both in some training classes. We’re going to learn a solid recall - she’s good, but not when it comes to a tasty bit of road kill - and a solid ‘drop’ or ‘leave’ command. I’ll report back and let you know how it goes. Happy weekend!
