At least, that’s what it looked like when I pulled back the curtains and discovered my dripping windows. Tis the season for condensation, a time for sponging down the panes and mopping up the sills, for feeling colder inside than outside, thanks to all the moisture in the air. Brrrrrr. I thought I’d beaten the issue [a couple of years ago when I discovered 3m’s insulation kit](. It involves sticking a sheet of plastic on the inside window sill, to act like double glazing. The packs are about $30, and one will cover several windows. It worked a treat the first couple of years, but now it needs replacing, so I guess that’s my weekend sorted - cleaning and filming my windows for another three years. Unfortunately, the plastic film is not recyclable, so I’ll keep saving up to get proper double glazing one day. Perhaps I could learn a thing or two about budget insulation from Palmy eco-design adviser [Nelson Lebo]( who used Perspex to double, and even triple, glaze some windows in his home. Inexpensive, and longer lasting than plastic film, the “eco-thrifty” DIYer reckons it only cost him $170 to triple glaze what he calls the “best window in all of New Zealand”. The down side: Perspex degrades in sunlight, so this is a method best reserved for windows that don’t get direct sun. But if I could do the same at my place, it would certainly make a difference. Have a great weekend!
