My electric mower hardly gets used: This is weed-eater territory, with a steep section planted in lots of fruit trees and the odd tÄ« kōuka/cabbage tree. I admire beautiful lawns, such as [Simon Slade’s inspiring striped section in Mt Pleasant, Christchurch]( and can see what a creative thrill it must be to have it looking so good. But I also admire the unkempt "a bit mad, a bit messy" front yard of Nelson woman Ali Boswijk. She’s planted wildflowers - lots of cosmos and black-eyed susans - [a wild display of colour and movement](. It has brought bees, birds, and the admiration of passers-by, to her central Nelson section. As architect Roger Walker - who has never had a lawn on any house he’s owned - says, land is scarce, they’re not making any more of it: “We’re going to live closer together and if we are, we need to use bushes, trees, and hedges to give us privacy rather than 12m of lawn.” It’s something to think about. Have a great weekend, whether you’re picking up an abundance of feijoas, admiring a wild, untamed section, or pulling out the lawnmower. [padding] [user profile pic] [padding] Joanna Davis [padding] Homed Reporter [padding] [spacer] [padding] [spacer][separator] [padding] [spacer] [padding] [spacer][Homed]( [spacer] Buy one of NZ's oldest apartments [spacer] Listings in the country's oldest apartment building are rare, but now there's a one-bed beauty available for $629k.
