Fern, the family dog probably uses it more. Fern taught herself how to hoon down the fibreglass shoot, just as thousands of Kiwi kids have done since the fast-food chain introduced play areas to its restaurants in Aotearoa New Zealand in the early 1980s. The piece of pop culture history [is now up for grabs on TradeMe.]( Like most 90s kids, I have plentiful childhood memories of scampering around the brightly-coloured playgrounds at various birthday parties. I have decidedly fewer fond memories of cleaning all manner of things out of those playgrounds in my teens, as a fast-food employee. A news story resurfaced another childhood memory for me this week: On road trips, my dad would point out the window, at whatever ramshackle, depressed-looking house he could spot, and say: “That’s your first house.” Now, that joke is something more of a reality. I’d be lucky to afford a rundown old house in the countryside. Case in point: [The cheapest house in the country, listed last week for $89,000]( halfway along State Highway 3 in the small town of Waverley. The offers are in, and we’re waiting to find out just how much the dilapidated two-bedroom went for. If you’re in line for a doer-upper, check out [this week’s episode of our podcast First Rung: Reno 101.]( This week it’s all about finishing touches - something the Waverley home is going to need more than a few of. Happy weekend.
