It’s a two-bedroom attached unit in Te Aro, with a kitchen opening to the lounge. The entire floor space is probably 50 square metres. If they have someone stay on the sofa bed in the lounge, it blocks the doorway to the bathroom. There’s no car parking on site (or anywhere in the neighbourhood for free, for that matter). For this hardly palatial arrangement, she and her two flatmates pay $550 rent a week. That’s a lot for students - or for anyone in fact. I don’t even bother telling her I paid $120 for a spacious two-bedroom flat in Christchurch “back in my day”. Of course that’s ancient history to her, and what’s the point of complaining. She does have a beautiful set up, but surely it’s not much of an answer to our housing crisis.
