At this stage, I’m still in the clear, but we all know someone who isn’t. And I confess I have been looking at German shepherd puppy listings on Trade Me. As I know from the last 30 years of adulting, if you keep looking at listings long enough, eventually you’re going to buy something. In my case, this has included houseplant cuttings, a schnoodle puppy, and once even a house. (I was in the market for a house, I just probably sped up the time frame by looking sooner). I’m deleting the puppy search from my phone right now. I already have one dog, the aforementioned schnoodle, and it wouldn’t be a kindness to her, at the dignified age of 10, to bring a rambunctious baby into the house. She has a good life, and since I work from home anyway, lockdowns don’t change her experience too much. But that’s not the case for many pets. In case you missed it, have a look at [the interview my colleague Kylie Klein-Nixon did with animal trainer Sonia Calvert]( they have plenty of insights into the behaviour of our furry family members.
