[So Auckland] Kia ora Aucklanders, Seriously, what were you thinking Duncan Garner? The AM Show host said he had [racked up $1000 of speeding fines]( in the Waterview Tunnel and "no one does 80 [kmh] on a new, four-lane, modern road". How out of touch is Garner with the average New Zealander? Most people can't afford to pay regular speeding fines, just to get to work a little faster. And how much time is he saving by speeding? Driving at 100kmh through the tunnel gets you to work 22 seconds early, compared to sticking to 80kmh. Garner has also been pinged for 86kmh, which saved him just eight seconds on his drive through the tunnel. Aside from the cost of speeding tickets, a crash at 100kmh would cause far more damage than a crash at 80kmh – and the human cost was potentially significant. Then you have traffic delays if the tunnel has to close. Your commute suddenly looks much longer. If Garner has so much money that he can speed without concern, maybe he should just endure the extra 22 seconds of his commute and give the money he would spend on fines to charity. Meanwhile, Phil Taylor has joined many this week reminiscing about the glory days of Dick Quax, who [died after a battle with cancer](. Alongside thousands, Phil’s dad used to take him to see Quax run at Mt Smart in the 1970s, and as a nation we were glued to the television whenever he, Sir John Walker and Rod Dixon took to the track in their specialist middle distances and marathons. Phil says: "I grew up on Arthur Lydiard turf and many of that world-class squad of runners he had in the 1950s and 1960s were part of our community – you'd see them out running the roads and pavements of the central west. Quax ran down our street on a training jog in those days, and it was the efficiency of his short and snappy steps, barrel chest and undoubted strength that drove him to effortlessly knock off the yards quickly. It was efficient, condensed power. "He was a smart runner, the toughest competitor and accepting of results. Silver medals and a world record is a legendary record in this country – against formidable opponents – in the golden age of athletics. He was an excellent public representative who didn't win every election he fought, always spoke his mind, and listened and was guided by his constituents. That's a great marathon innings." [150-year-old ship emerges]( A schooner that ran aground in the 1800s has been discovered at Muriwai. [All about the fuel tax]( How much will it cost, and why do we need it anyway?
