[So Auckland] Kia ora Aucklanders Dog owners need to take greater responsibility for their pets. It's heartbreaking to hear of a [little dog killed at Craigavon Park out West](. Often parents with young children walk their dogs there. We frequently visit the playground at the park with our children, including my one-year-old who loves dogs. The playground at Craigavon is fully-fenced, which offers some reassurance to parents. However, to reach the playground you have to park by the dog area and often unleashed dogs are running around. It is also common for dogs to be tied up by the playground. Last week, I kept a tight grip on my child's hand as we walked past a large, barking dog to get to the playground gate. I'm teaching my son about safety around dogs, but he's still too young to understand the danger. After this vicious dog attack I will be more vigilant when visiting Craigavon Park. Dog owners need green spaces to give their pets space to run without a leash, but we must also keep our children safe. Owners with larger dogs should consider a muzzle and leash in public parks. Just imagine if that small dog was actually a child. Meanwhile have you caught up on the excellent project Stuff and Newshub have produced, [A Tale Of Two Cities, illustrating in a three-part series information about the Auckland Prosperity Index](. Now that may sound a bit dry, but the index talks about the inequality we live amidst. To an extent It shows nothing's really changed - people in higher paying jobs can afford to live in the traditionally attractive and prosperous areas, while the lesser paid are still striving nonetheless as hard in historically working-to-middle-class suburbs. But what's alarming is: "There has been a huge growth in inequality, with the gap between rich and poor wider than at any time since World War Two," says Patrick McVeigh, of ATEED.
