Iâm nagging myself really, because I know itâs time to bust out the dusters and [the lemon/vinegar spritz](, but I havenât yet either. Besides, spring cleaning sounds kind of old-fashioned. I learned the [tricks and habits]( of the annual sprucefest from my grandmother, a doughty member of the Greatest Generation. She grew up scrubbing floors by hand with grated carbolic soap dissolved in hot water. In this age of Dysons, who really needs an annual reminder to take the rugs outside and beat them with a paddle? But I reckon spring cleaning is about more than houseproud cleanliness. Itâs the time I set aside to get my house in order before the season of barbecues and house guests, Christmas and New Yearâs. Itâs an opportunity to [declutter, and assess]( - am I ever going to finish that crochet project? Do I really need four black merino polo necks? How many brown paper shopping bags does one household need? (If you end up with a pile of stuff you donât need, you could try selling it on [Neighbourlyâs Spring Garage]( sale.) Deep cleans have been shown to help lift the mood and mindset of the household. [One study]( suggested it might even have an effect on cortisol - the stress hormone - levels. Goodness knows we could all do with a bit of that at the moment. This weekend, Iâll be getting stuck into my home office, and - weather pending - the backyard too. If you want some help deciding where to start, check out our [spring cleaning checklist](. Whatever youâve got planned, I hope you enjoy your weekend. Happy Spring!
