It’s not another [Neighbours At War situation]( or anything grim like that. I just want his leaves. The awkward part? “Hello, you don’t know me but I’ve been coveting the dead sycamore leaves all over your lawn for the past week. May I have them?” He’s going to think I’m an absolute weirdo, isn’t he? It’s just that I’ve always considered fallen leaves some of the best free compost and mulch you can put on your vege garden in autumn. It provides nutritious fodder and protection for all the beneficial creepy crawlies living out there during the coldest months. It can protect tender roots and shoots from frosts. And eventually it rots down to a rich, loamy topsoil that’s perfect for planting in come spring. Clearing up leaves helps the community in a couple of ways, too. Street drains clogged with leaves [can cause flooding]( and left on paths and grass, leaves can become slippery and dangerous. They’re also unsightly when they get all black and sludgy. In extreme circumstances, they [can even mess up road markings]( although, I’m not sure we can really blame leaf litter for that whole situation. Anyway, I’m determined to get those leaves. Short of taking this email and reading it to my neighbour, however, I just have to hope he won’t mind some stranger clearing up his front lawn for him, right? Wish me luck. Happy weekend.
