Spiky and confronting, the painting is not going to be to everyone’s taste, but it spoke to Tim when he first visited the house, and now he hopes it will speak to a new owner as he’s put the home on the market. I love the creative, individual feel the piece gives the home. As typically sturdy and 1950s as the home is, there can't be another like it anywhere and that really appeals to me. When our homes are such a huge investment, we’re often afraid to put our unique marks on them. We don’t even like to paint them bold or unusual colours: The biggest selling paint [colours in New Zealand are variants of white.]( Many people worry that non-neutral colours will undercut how much the property [might be worth to some imagined future buyer.]( But, surely it’s better when[our homes are a reflection of the unique]( and vibrant lives we live inside them, rather than decorated to appeal to the broadest cross-section of people. Tim bought this home, mural intact, and saw fit to pour years and money into making it a warm, cosy family home. So, maybe individuality doesn’t always have to be a barrier to property sales?
