Their creative thinking ticks so many boxes. It keeps Sue close and safe as she deals with ageing and dementia - there's even an extra bedroom should she need round-the-clock care at any stage. It also provides the family with multiple options in the future. Christian Robertson imagines that his children, now aged 16, 15 and 11, could live in the two-bedroom unit while they are studying (allowing them to leave home without leaving home), and he’s also looking forward to living in it himself with his partner at some point, perhaps with the kids and their kids in the main house. The fact that the minor dwelling was designed to take Sue’s dementia into consideration - with elements familiar to her former Queensland home, with high contrast surfaces, and with “wandering paths” in the garden - is just another way this solution works for everyone.
