[Support our Journalism]( [Support our Journalism »]( â HOMED 20 April 2024 â Kia ora {NAME}, Letâs talk house viewings. Perhaps you, like our editor Jo Davis, have listed your house recently and are going through the hassle of having to keep it uncluttered and spotless for viewings. Or maybe you are on the lookout for a house to buy or a place to rent, and visiting homes you have never been in before. But I hope you havenât had the experience of the people who commented on a social media post this week. Property coach Steve Goodey asked his 58,000 Facebook followers to comment on any weird viewings, and[they delivered](. You have to take social media at face value, but we did get a chuckle out of the comments - you couldnât make most of this stuff up. I have spoken to agents with similar stories - a sex toy left on the bedroom floor was quickly hidden out of sight. Another agent did a double-take at the very large, graphic and disturbing art in one clientâs main bedroom (there was a lot of blood). The art was removed to avoid offending potential buyers. But I am not sure how the owners slept in the same room as it. (With the lights out, presumably.) Perhaps the really weird thing, though, is that many of these viewers ended up buying the house. Never mind the dead rat in the hot water cupboard (that was still there on settlement), or the filthy toilets. Buyers were able to see past these things. But a [good impression has to be worth more than a bad one]( surely. Iâm a sucker for fresh flowers and a coffee machine on the bench. And a house that smells good (but not of incense). Freshly mown lawns and a weed-free garden also get brownie points. If you are out house hunting this weekend, good luck. If you are holding open homes, just be sure thereâs no-one still asleep in bed when you leave the house. And if you are staying in the house during a private viewing, make sure you have your clothes on.
