It is a celebration of freedom for Black Americans and a day to reflect that while we’ve come far, the fight for equity and justice is far from over. 158 years later, our nation continues to battle the shameful and hurtful legacies of slavery, Jim Crow laws, voter suppression, and housing segregation. That’s why I’m fighting in Congress to make sure our laws finally reflect this truth: that Black lives do indeed matter. Americans across this nation have stood up and demanded action from their leaders. We all want a nation that is more just, more safe and more secure – for ALL Americans. This means addressing issues that have faced the Black community for hundreds of years: increasing accountability and training to ensure public safety, addressing inequities in health care, and expanding access to economic opportunity. To be a nation that is more just and delivers on the freedom promised 158 years ago, we need meaningful action and long-lasting reforms for Black communities and systemic changes to address the legacy of our nation’s original sin.
